Surface Festival Tour goes down a storm

Loud, sweaty, beer-saturated. Three words to describe the Surface Festival Tour 2010. After placing in the top three in the Surface Festival 2010 Final at the O2, London, the three winning bands – Great Imitation, Twister and Wings of Pegasus – were invited to tour the UK. The whole tour was a great success on many levels.

The bands had the privilege of learning life on the road on a double-decker Jumbocruiser Megaloader Tour Bus used by artists such as Kid Rock, Moby, Snoop Dog, Gorillaz, Alexandra Burke, Girls Aloud and Groove Armada. The Jumbocruiser consisted of two decks, 16 beds, seating area, lounge area, toileting and kitchen facilities, entertainment systems, along with a fridge full of booze. Ryan Albutt, vocalist from Great Imitation: “The tour bus was amazing and we had a proper laugh. It gave us a flavour of what professional touring is like.”

Performance venues included the Fleece in Bristol, The Purple Turtle in London and The Flapper in Birmingham. Stevie Stoker, frontman from Twister: “The atmosphere was fantastic. Everyone was jumping to the beat and really getting into the vibe. It was great.”

The bands were provided with a top end backline from Marshall, Ashdown, Tama, Zildjian, D’addario, Evans and Planet Waves, and a tour manager was supplied who accompanied the bands throughout the tour. Fil Henley, Wings of Pegasus’ vocalist: “The organization of the tour was top notch. It took the stress out of the usual gigging, setting up and sound checking. ”

Throughout the tour the three bands were given lots of industry advice. Industry guests included EMI, Island Records, Universal, IDOL magazine to name but a few. Ben Scholfield from IDOL Magazine commented on the winning band ‘Great Imitation’: “I was trying to think of something clever to say, but I just spent the whole time smiling, brilliant, loved it!”

Jay Mitchell from Surface explains why the Surface Tour was organised: “Live performances are still where you can really make your mark as a band. It’s this aspect that the Surface Festival is focused on keeping alive. Each live performance is great opportunity to reach new fans and meet your existing ones face to face. The Surface Tour gave the bands the chance to gain exposure from different audiences every night, sell merchandise, promote networking opportunities and attract new fans. “
